POLICE ADVICE

West Midlands Police welcomes you to the country. Here is some essential information about the law.


Driving

Remember to drive on the left hand side of the road, to drive a car in the UK the following documents are required:

A driving licence
Insurance
MOT - yearly test certificate of road worthiness
Tax Disc - road tax.


The driver and all passengers must wear a seat belt

The vehicle must be road worthy and be driven carefully within the speed limit. If the signs do not state otherwise, in a built up area the speed limit is 30mph (approx 45kph). On a single carriageway main road 60mph (approx 95kph) and motorways 70mph (approx 113kph).

Do not use your mobile phone when driving. It is illegal

If you are involved in an accident, you MUST stop and exchange yourdetails with all the other drivers involved. In a case of injury, the police MUST be called, in other cases it is advisable to inform the police. You MUST stop if instructed to by police personnel. It is likely the officer will ask to see your driving documents.

It is unlawful to drive a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Unlawful behaviour:
Being in possession of, or using weapons of any kind. (Including the carrying of a small pocket knife in public) The use of offensive, threatening or abusive words or behaviour. Drunk and disorderly behaviour, breaching the peace, fighting. Being on private property without the owner’s knowledge or consent.

It is unlawful to use, possess or supply any controlledsubstance (e.g. Cannabis, Heroin or Cocaine).

If you are a witness or victim of any crime, including domestic violence, or if you are intimidated or harassed due to your nationality, ethnicity, beliefs, gender, disability or sexuality, it is important that you report it to the police.
